Rabies Post Exposure Vaccination

All cases of suspected rabies exposure should be treated immediately to prevent the onset of clinical symptoms and death. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) consists of wound treatment, the administration of rabies vaccines based on WHO recommendations, and if indicated, the administration of rabies immunoglobulin.

The wound should be treated in a timely and correct manner, strictly disinfected, the risk of the wound should be assessed. Then rabies vaccine should be vaccinated according to the results. Five-dose rabies vaccine should be carried out on D 0-3-7-14-28 respectively. The vaccination site: adults are injected intramuscularly in the deltoid muscle of the upper arm, and for children, it is recommended to inject the vaccine into the muscle at anterolateral thigh. During the vaccination period, you must pay attention to rest, keep in a light diet, do not drink alcohol, and do not exercise vigorously.

A very small number of patients still have rabies attacks after being injected with rabies vaccine, which may be due to: 1. The wound was not cleaned and disinfected in a timely and correct manner after the injury; 2. The wound was larger and the number of viruses was relatively high, severe contamination, or with multiple wounds, etc., passive rabies immune preparations around the wounds should be infiltrated and injected which are not applied in time; 3. The injured person has extremely low immunity or has immunodeficiency diseases; 4. The first dose of rabies vaccination was too late.
