What is rabies disease?
When you are bitten by a rabid animal, then rabies virus enters
the wound from the infected saliva, rabies virus travels through the nerves to
the spinal cord and brain, which can last approximately 3 to 12 weeks. When the
virus reached the brain, the virus multiplies rapidly and passed to the
salivary glands. Signs and symptoms begin to present. The death usually happens
within 7 days of becoming sick. However, Rabies is a preventable viral disease by
human rabies vaccine. The most important matter is to get the human rabies
vaccine injected in time.
What is human rabies vaccine?
Although rabies is a 100% fatal disease, it is preventable by vaccines.
Human rabies vaccine can protect the infected persons by triggering your immune
system to produce antibodies. These special proteins can recognize foreign
invaders, like viruses, and destroy them.
The WHO recommends 2 main immunization strategies for the prevention of human rabies:
• Post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) which includes extensive and thorough wound washing at the rabies-exposure site, together with rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) administration if indicated, and the administration of a course of several doses of rabies vaccine;
• Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) which is the administration of several doses of rabies vaccine to high risk populations before exposure to rabies.
For both PEP and PrEP, vaccines can be administered by either intra-dermal (ID) or intra-muscular (IM) routes. BioShoot is a five-dose schedule and should be given intra-muscular (IM) routes.
